Nuova sessione di scatti per il tema che riguarderà il mio nuovo Calendario Glamour 2011: i 7 peccati capitali e i 5 sensi.
Questa volta vi mostro gli scatti dell'Olfatto o odorato che è uno dei cinque sensi specifici e rende possibile, tramite i chemioricettori, le percezioni delle sostanze chimiche volatili e dei gas presenti nell'aria.
Mentre nell'uomo il ruolo dell'olfatto come strumento di conoscenza dell'ambiente circostante ha un carattere secondario, negli animali è uno strumento indispensabile per le attività fondamentali quali la caccia, la localizzazione dei partner, dei compagni e dei predatori. In alcune farfalle, l'odore della femmina può attirare il maschio sottovento da molti chilometri di distanza.

Today I show you the smell. This sense is mediated by specialized sensory cells of the nasal cavity of vertebrates, and, by analogy, sensory cells of the antennae of invertebrates.
Many vertebrates, including most mammals and reptiles, have two distinct olfactory systems - the main olfactory system, and the accessory olfactory system (mainly used to detect pheremones). For air-breathing animals, the main olfactory system detects volatile chemicals, and the accessory olfactory system detects fluid-phase chemicals. For water-dwelling organisms, e.g., fish or crustaceans, the chemicals are present in the surrounding aqueous medium. Olfaction, along with taste, is a form of chemoreception. The chemicals themselves which activate the olfactory system, generally at very low concentrations, are called odorants.
